Practise practice
“I wish I had a sister at home to dance with,” sighed a young man I know.
We had been at Lindy Hop class, a story in itself. For complicated reasons, which I will explain later, we have eschewed the usual “rotation” so much a feature of swing-dance lessons. This means that the young man and I dance together for the entire session. Although not ideal, it does mean that I can follow his progress–and presumably he can follow mine!
As we are a small community, I am getting to know how the MMWP dancers dance. One is unsure of eight-count Lindy, so when we dance I always know to expect six-count. Another will practice the most advanced waltz pattern we know so far. Still another loves the little variations in swing-dance, and uses them in a joking fashion.
Our star dancers are brother and sister, and they practise at home. There are other brothers, and they too have the opportunity to practise. But for everyone else, I wish I had a big room at my disposal so I could just declare one night a week practice night, and it wouldn’t matter how many people came. (That said, I imagine someone associated with Edinburgh University, arguably the geographical centre of our lives, might be able to arrange something there.)
For, really, it is practice as much as lessons that turns a non-dancer into a dancer, and with partner dances you really do need to practise with a partner. And one session a month isn’t ideal!
